The Cotswolds - Castle Combe

Castle Combe is a beautiful Cotswolds village that visitors have been coming to enjoy for more than a century. The small street leading from the Market Cross down to the By Brook is just as picturesque today.

Castle Combe’s history goes back much further. The site of the castle is above today’s village, but is little more than earthworks now. Originally it was a British hill fort which became occupied by the Romans and then the Normans, who built the fort up into a Castle.

By the Middle Ages the village in the valley had become an important centre for the wool industry. The spinsters and weavers lived in the cottages (hence names such as "Weaver’s House") and the river, still known as By Brook, provided the power to run the mills.

Castle Combe has been the location for more than 11 movie and tv projects including  ‘Doctor Doolittle’, 'War Horse', 'Stardust', ‘The Wolf Man', 80s ‘Robin Hood’ series, ‘Doctor Thorne’ and more. .

The village houses are all of typical Cotswold type, constructed in stone with thick walls and roofs made from split natural stone tiles. The properties are many hundreds of years old and are listed as ancient monuments. Strict rules apply to preserve the beauty and character of Castle Combe for later generations to admire.

I think someone from Scotland must either live here, or did at some point in time, since the unicorn is their national animal.
This window was so amazingly old
Somebody got their milk delivery the day we were there

And we had to check out the church. I'm always on the hunt for an interesting memorial, and St Andrews Church didn't disappoint. We founds Sir Walter de Dunstanville who had been there since 1270.
